Outpatient Rehab

Outpatient Treatment Programs

Outpatient rehab varies in the types and intensity of services offered.   Such treatment costs less than residential or inpatient treatment and often is more suitable for people with jobs or extensive social supports.

However, it should be noted that low-intensity programs may offer little more than drug education.  Other outpatient models, such as intensive day treatment, can be comparable to residential programs in services and effectiveness, depending on the individual patient’s characteristics and needs.  Additionally, in many outpatient programs, group counseling can be a significant component.

After IOP (intensive outpatient program) is complete, many recovering users return to their homes and families and attempt to re-enter everyday life.  However, remaining active in the recovery community is encouraged.

Many individuals continue attending outpatient addiction treatment programs or to an outpatient rehab to maintain sobriety best.

Outpatient Rehab For Adults

Treatment experts also designed some outpatient rehab and programs to treat patients with medical or other mental health problems in addition to their drug disorders.  [1]

Generally, addiction treatments commonly offer an outpatient setting for adolescents.  In fact, when delivered by well-trained clinicians, this can be highly effective.  Outpatient treatment is recommended for patients with less severe addictions, few additional mental health problems, and a supportive living environment.  However, evidence suggests that more severe cases can be treated in outpatient settings as well.

Outpatient treatment may be delivered individually or in a group format.  Low- or moderate-intensity outpatient care is generally provided once or twice a week.  Furthermore, outpatient programs may offer drug abuse prevention programming (focused on deterring further drug use) or other behavioral and family interventions.  [2]

Outpatient Rehab Programs

The drug-free outpatient treatment uses various counseling and therapeutic techniques, skills training, educational supports; and little or no pharmacotherapy to address the specific needs of individuals moving from active substance abuse to abstinence.  Basically, outpatient rehab is the least treatment approach and varies considerably in intensity, duration of care, and staffing patterns.  [3] Most of these programs see patients only once or twice weekly and use some combination of:

  • Counseling Strategies
  • Social Work
  • 12-Step or Self-Help Meetings
  • Some programs now offer prescribed medications to alleviate prolonged withdrawal symptoms.
  • Others stress case management and referral of patients to available community resources for medical, mental health, family treatment; educational, vocational, or financial counseling; and legal or social services.
