Overview of Wellbutrin Withdrawal

Antidepressants rank among the most prescribed medications in the US. Finding the right one can be a journey, often involving trial and error. During this process, some encounter antidepressant discontinuation syndrome or withdrawal, mainly with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that impact serotonin in the brain.

Wellbutrin stands apart by affecting dopamine and noradrenaline rather than serotonin. Consequently, withdrawal symptoms are typically mild or even absent. However, altering medications should only be done under professional guidance. Consult your healthcare provider for safe transitions, such as gradual tapering, and to address any potential symptoms.

Wellbutrin Withdrawal Symptoms

Most people don’t have withdrawal symptoms when they stop taking Wellbutrin, but those who do can have different kinds and levels of symptoms:

  • Sweating is when you sweat too much and get red, especially when it’s hot.
  • Digestive Problems: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite are often caused by serotonin’s role in digestion.
  • Sleep Disruption includes insomnia, trouble falling or staying asleep, and vivid or scary dreams.
  • Changes in the nerves include tremors, restless legs, numbness, and trouble walking.
  • Changes in mood, anxiety, agitation, mania, or depression are all examples of psychological shifts.
  • Brain Zaps: Feelings in the head similar to shocks or shivers.

Even though it doesn’t happen often, Wellbutrin withdrawal can cause agitation and anger. Those who stop smoking with Wellbutrin might feel milder urges to smoke again.

Wellbutrin Withdrawal Timeline

Factors such as dosage, duration of use, and individual response can affect how long it takes to withdraw from Wellbutrin. After stopping, withdrawal symptoms may appear a few days or weeks later. They might last a few weeks, or they might last a whole month. Everyone reacts differently to withdrawal, so the timeline is just an estimate. If you want personalized guidance and support as you wean off Wellbutrin, talking to your doctor about it is a good idea.

Wellbutrin Drug Facts Sheet

Why is this medication prescribed?

Bupropion (Aplenzin, Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL) is used to treat depression. Bupropion (Aplenzin, Wellbutrin XL) is also used to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD; episodes of depression that occur at the same time each year [usually in the fall and winter but rarely may occur in the spring or summer months]).

Bupropion (Zyban) is used to help people stop smoking. Bupropion is in a class of medications called antidepressants. It works by increasing certain types of activity in the brain.

How should this medicine be used?

Bupropion comes as a tablet and a sustained-release or extended-release (long-acting) tablet to take by mouth. The regular tablet (Wellbutrin) is usually taken three times a day, with doses at least 6 hours apart, or four times a day, with doses at least 4 hours apart. The sustained-release tablet (Wellbutrin SR, Zyban) is usually taken twice a day, with doses at least 8 hours apart.

The extended-release tablet (Aplenzin, Wellbutrin XL) is usually taken once daily in the morning; doses of the extended-release tablet should be taken at least 24 hours apart.

Other uses for this medicine

Bupropion is also sometimes used to treat episodes of depression in patients with bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods) and to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; more difficulty focusing, controlling actions, and remaining still or quiet than other people who are the same age).

Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this medication for your condition.

Wellbutrin for Smoking Cessation

Using Wellbutrin as a treatment for smoking cessation can be effective in helping individuals quit smoking. The exact reason bupropion works as a smoking cessation aid is not fully understood, but it’s believed to be due to its effects on dopamine levels in the brain.

Unlike other smoking cessation treatments, bupropion does not contain nicotine. Instead, it may mimic some of the effects of nicotine, causing the brain to release more dopamine. This can help individuals manage nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings when quitting smoking. While it may not reduce nicotine addiction, it can aid in the quitting process.

Wellbutrin Withdrawal Treatment

Wellbutrin (bupropion) is a medication that is primarily used to treat depression and seasonal affective disorder and to aid smoking cessation. Although it is not commonly associated with addiction, individuals can develop a dependence on Wellbutrin, particularly if it is misused or taken in higher doses than prescribed.

If an individual is struggling with Wellbutrin addiction, they should seek professional help from a healthcare provider or addiction specialist. The first step in treating Wellbutrin addiction is to stop taking the medication, which can result in withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and irritability.

A healthcare provider may also prescribe medications to manage withdrawal symptoms and provide support during the recovery process.

In addition to medication and therapy, lifestyle changes such as exercise, healthy eating habits, and stress management techniques can also help promote recovery and prevent relapse. It is vital to seek professional help and follow a comprehensive treatment plan to overcome addiction to Wellbutrin effectively.

Medically Assisted Detox

Medical detox is the initial phase of treating drug addiction and typically involves managing withdrawal. However, it doesn’t address the underlying behavior and thought patterns contributing to substance abuse. To achieve long-term recovery, receiving ongoing support from various treatment approaches and settings beyond detox is essential.

During detox, experiencing cravings is a frequent occurrence that can increase the risk of relapse. Inpatient treatment with constant medical care can help prevent relapse by providing the necessary medication and medical expertise to mitigate cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Clinicians can also offer guidance and support to help individuals manage their addiction and maintain sobriety.

Psychotherapy for Depression and Anxiety

Several different modalities of psychotherapy have been used in the treatment of depression, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – An evidence-based therapy that is highly effective in treating depression. This therapy helps individuals change negative patterns of thinking and behavior that contribute to their depression. CBT is a structured, short-term therapy that focuses on specific goals and is often used with medication.
  • Person-Centered Therapy – A humanistic approach that emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. This therapy aims to create a supportive and non-judgmental environment where individuals can explore their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors.
  • Solution-Focused Therapy – a brief therapy that focuses on finding solutions to specific problems. This therapy encourages individuals to identify their strengths and build on them rather than focusing on their weaknesses or problems. Solution-Focused Therapy is often combined with other therapies and can effectively treat mild to moderate depression.

Wellbutrin Withdrawal Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders are prevalent, as traumatic experiences can contribute to the development of both. Dual diagnosis rehabilitation is a specialized approach that addresses both issues concurrently, recognizing the complex interplay between mental health and substance abuse. An integrated system of care that treats both disorders simultaneously is often the best approach for effective treatment and recovery.

It is important to note that treating one disorder without addressing the other can result in poor outcomes, as both disorders often reinforce and perpetuate each other. Whether the mental health disorder or substance abuse problem came first, the same team or provider should handle the treatment for both disorders to ensure that all underlying issues are addressed.

Dual diagnosis treatment may include a combination of evidence-based therapies, medication management, and ongoing support to promote long-term recovery. It can be challenging, but seeking professional help is essential to healing and a better quality of life.

Wellbutrin Medication-Assisted Treatments

Medication-Assisted Treatments (MAT) are a common approach in rehab centers to address substance use and mental health disorders, including those related to Wellbutrin use.

This treatment combines medications and medical procedures with therapy to identify the root causes of addiction and develop strategies for behavior change. Substance use disorders often arise due to underlying emotional or psychological issues, and addressing these issues is key to achieving long-term recovery.

At We Level Up NJ treatment center, our specialists can provide information about dual diagnosis and detox programs designed to treat Wellbutrin withdrawal and other co-occurring mental health conditions like anxiety and depression. The goal is to provide a comprehensive approach that addresses the addiction and underlying issues, leading to long-term recovery and a better quality of life.

Jen’s Addiction Recovery Testimonial

“I wanted my life back. I was a shell of a person. I wanted to be trusted, I wanted relationships back that I lost, mainly my children and family. It started innocent enough, I got into a car accident and then I got kind of sucked into the whole, you know, medication issue with the pills.

And before I knew it, I was in a cloud. I was sucked in by addiction and with my mind, I kept thinking it was OK because a doctor was prescribing this for me, a doctor was giving me this, a doctor was giving me that. So, I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong. Level Up supports my family and my relationships with my family and they’ve helped me grown as a person.

When I first started there, I was so intimidated and kind of scared, you know? But, they’ve taught me, they’ve kind of taught me how to come into my own. And then, you know, when I get the call at the middle of the day from my twenty-one-year-old daughter, just to say ‘I love you, Mom.’, that’s amazing.”
